Tim Greenway has conceded to Republican incumbent Tammy Shepherd in the GOP contest for the Vinton District seat on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors.
Shepherd topped Greenway by just 17 votes in Tuesday’s primary, with 50.4% of the 2,119 votes cast, to 49.6% for Greenway, according to unofficial numbers from the Virginia Department of Elections posted Tuesday night.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Greenway stated, “I wish to concede the election and congratulate Tammy on a well run campaign.”
Under state law, a candidate can request a recount if the margin is 1% or less after the election results have been certified.
“I don’t wish for a recount to be performed,” Greenway said in the statement. “It won’t matter to me if the mail in votes would sway the outcome. I would have been equally disappointed if I had won by 17.”
He went on to thank his supporters, adding that he will have another statement coming soon in an interview.
Democrats did not field a candidate in the race, making the primary tantamount to election, barring the entry of any independent candidates. The deadline for independents to file was Tuesday evening, and as of 4 p.m. that day none had done so, according to the county registrar’s office. County offices were closed Wednesday in observance of Juneteenth.
Shepherd will serve through the end of 2025 in the seat left open by last fall’s election of former Supervisor Jason Peters as the county’s commissioner of the revenue. In January, the board of supervisors appointed Shepherd to temporarily fill his seat.
