Curt Diemer will replace Jeff Helgeson as the Republican nominee for the Ward 3 seat on Lynchburg City Council.

Helgeson unexpectedly announced Monday that will retire after his third term on council ends in December. On Tuesday night, Lynchburg Republicans officially nominated Curt Diemer as their nominee. Political parties are allowed to replace candidates as long as they do so before Sept. 6.

Diemer owns a Lynchburg photography business and is a longtime Republican activist. He will face Democrat James Coleman in a ward that leans solidly Republican.

Early voting begins Sept. 20.

Lynchburg’s seven-member council consists of four members elected by each of the city’s wards and three elected at-large. All four ward seats are on the ballot this fall. Cardinal will host a candidate forum in Lynchburg on Oct. 10; the event is free but registration is required. Registration is now open.
