Vice President Kamala Harris won Virginia with a margin of 4 percentage points over former President Donald Trump after months of Republican attempts to characterize the commonwealth as “in play” for the conservative candidate.
The race was called by the Associated Press at around 11:50 p.m., nearly five hours after the polls closed Tuesday night, when it was determined Virginia’s 13 electoral votes would go to Harris. The Democrat’s margin of victory is expected to grow as votes continue to be counted into early Wednesday morning.
Spokespersons for neither the Harris campaign nor the Trump campaign immediately responded to a request for comment.
Harris’ win in Virginia comes just days after Trump held a last-minute campaign rally in the southwest part of the state in an attempt to run up the Republican vote in a region considered to be a conservative stronghold. That effort did not shake out a win on Election Day.
