On Monday, Salem City Council will hold a second and final vote on the HopeTree Family Services rezoning.

At their last meeting, the council voted 3-2 to approve the rezoning of 62 acres of HopeTree’s land to a planned unit development.

The council will also consider on second reading an ordinance almost doubling the salaries of the mayor and the council effective July 1, 2027. The council voted 3-2 to approve this ordinance after the first reading at their last meeting.

Salaries for mayor and council would rise to $24,000 and $22,000, respectively. These numbers match new limits set by the General Assembly in 2023. Salary limits set by the General Assembly had not previously been changed since 1996.

Other local governing bodies, including Roanoke City Council, have already taken advantage of these new limits.

The council will also consider, on second reading, ordinances pertaining to storage containers and historic structures.

The meeting at 6:30 p.m. will be held in Council Chambers at 114 North Broad Street, Salem, Virginia 24153. The full agenda for the meeting can be found here
