Residents can weigh in Tuesday as the Lynchburg City Council considers several zoning requests to allow construction of 88 townhomes at 750 Leesville Road.

The council has scheduled a public hearing before it takes up zoning requests from Maddox and Sons Construction. The hearing will be part of the council’s 7 p.m. meeting in city hall’s council chamber. The agenda packet can be found here.

Maddox and Sons wants council to amend the city’s future land use map to redesignate the area for medium-density residential use, to rezone about 11.7 acres from low-density residential to medium-density residential district (conditional) and to grant a conditional use permit for its townhomes.

The future land use map presently designates most of the area for institutional use such as private nonprofit hospitals and other nonprofits, private schools and churches.

Maddox and Sons’ plan would build a townhome complex at a density less than the 12 units per acre allowed by medium-density residential district zoning.

The property is adjacent to an existing townhome development. The planning commission voted in October to recommend approval of Maddox and Sons’ requests.

According to material presented to council in its information packet, the city anticipates $215,380 in annual real estate taxes if the new townhomes are built.

Also on the council’s agenda are public hearings on and consideration of adopting a new Diamond Hill Neighborhood Plan as part of the city’s comprehensive plan, renewed concession agreements for four rental car companies at the Lynchburg Regional Airport and a non-exclusive agreement to let Liberty University install and operate street lights along Liberty Mountain Drive.
