On Monday, the Roanoke City Planning Commission will consider an amended application from Homes for America, a Maryland company, to rezone 30 parcels of land in the Belmont-Fallon neighborhood in Southeast Roanoke. The company is looking to construct three apartment buildings, totaling 155 affordable housing units.

The land is currently owned through the Gateway Project, which is connected to the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

The 30 parcels of land are currently zoned institutional district, mixed-use with conditions, and residential mixed density. The developer is looking to rezone all 30 to residential multifamily districts with conditions.

Homes for America is also asking to repeal proffered conditions that would expand uses and allow certain properties to stay on the lot.

This issue was brought before the planning commission during their January meeting, and while the commission generally supported the project, it suggested ideas on “how to make the project interact more with the street and the neighborhood,” application documents read.

Those who are interested can read the entire agenda for Monday’s public hearing here. The public hearing at 1:30 p.m. will be held in the EOC Conference Room, Room 159, at the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building.
