The Salem City Council on Monday evening will be considering the sale of a property on West Main Street to be used as a gas station and convenience store.
The city bought the 2.68-acre property at 2102 W. Main St. in 2019 for the purpose of a “future economic development project,” city documents read. The city paid $725,000 for the land.
RDC Funds, a real estate investment company, is looking to buy it from the city for $795,000.
“The sale of the property would fulfill the intended purpose of the city’s purchase in 2019,” agenda documents read.
“Since the former Carilion building was purchased, it has been used as a distance-safe office during COVID and reviewed and discussed as a permanent space for various city departments,” said Mike Stevens, communications director with the city. “Mostly, it has been looked at for potential businesses by our economic development office.”
The purchase agreement states that the intended use of a gas station is a “portion of the consideration for seller’s willingness to sell the property.” Construction must start within one year of the sale. The agreement also contains a feasibility study period of 120 days.
