On Monday, the Roanoke City Council will receive the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Throughout this planning process, City Manager Valmarie Turner has outlined some priorities for the city — including raising compensation for city employees and addressing backlogged maintenance on city buildings.

Mayor Joe Cobb and Turner have both stated the budget is their number one priority at this time.

At a March 3 joint meeting with the school board and the council, Turner asked the school division to submit a level budget. This would lead to the division receiving $7 million less than it had expected from the city.

Since 2011, the city has allocated 40% of its revenue to the school division. A change was made to that policy last year, resulting in the division not seeing any extra yearly revenue over what was budgeted. And this policy may be up for changes again this year as the city works to balance its budget.

As of midafternoon Friday, the proposed budget was not available for the public to view. The agenda for Monday’s meeting can be found here.

The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. in the city council chamber, fourth floor, room 450 of the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building.
