Real estate tax, personal property tax, heavy construction machinery tax, machinery and tools tax, merchants’ capital tax — and the meals tax: All these taxes are up for adjustment in a public hearing Tuesday in Franklin County.
The Board of Supervisors will hold public hearings beginning at 6 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors Board Room at the Government Center at 1255 Franklin Street, Suite 104, in Rocky Mount.
The meals tax, proposed to rise from 4% to 6% “on the amount paid for food and beverages purchased from any food establishment, whether prepared in such food establishment or not, and whether consumed on the premises or not,” would bring in 50% more revenue from that tax.
The real estate tax levy, proposed at $0.45/$100 of assessed value, is the lowest of the tax levy rates but likely to be the one of most interest, since it determines how the latest real estate assessment will impact the property tax bill property owners receive.
Interested citizens can attend in person, or view the hearings live on the county’s YouTube page.
