A public hearing will be held Monday by the Washington County Planning Commission on a request for a special exception permit that would allow a telecommunications tower and antennas to be built on more than 8 acres of property at 20281 Rustic Lane in Abingdon.
The request is being made by Fred Low, of Chaille Tower Consultants, for Motorola Solutions. The tower would be used for emergency communications and be on the same property as the Washington County Public Safety Building.
Currently, the property is zoned for general business, which does not allow communications towers, so a special exception permit is required.
Homes are located to the west, south and east of the property, and a solid waste company is across the street. An Appalachian Power electrical substation adjoins the property.
So far, Stephen Richardson, a zoning official with the county, said he has heard no opposition to the tower.
The commission will also hold a public hearing on a request by the Bristol Humane Society for a special-exception permit that would allow it to expand an existing veterinary clinic at 16222 Lee Highway in Bristol. The clinic is also in a general business district.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the county government building at 1 Government Center Place in Abingdon. You can view the agenda here.
