Residents and business owners across Southwest and Southside Virginia who were affected by February flooding and storms will have until Nov. 3 to file federal tax returns and make payments, the IRS announced Wednesday.
Following the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, people who live or have a business in these 36 localities are eligible to file under the new deadline: the city of Bristol and the counties of Amelia, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland, Botetourt, Buchanan, Buckingham, Campbell, Carroll, Charlotte, Craig, Cumberland, Dickenson, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Grayson, Halifax, Lee, Lunenburg, Montgomery, Nottoway, Page, Pittsylvania, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Pulaski, Rockingham, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe.
According to a news release from the IRS, the new deadline applies to individual income tax returns and payments normally due April 15, as well as to 2024 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts and to the estimated tax payments normally due April 15, June 16 and Sept. 15.
Affected businesses also will have until Nov. 3 to file quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due April 30, July 31 and Oct. 31; calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns normally due March 17; calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due April 15; and calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns normally due May 15.
Eligible taxpayers who receive a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS should call the telephone number on the notice to have the agency abate the penalty, the release said.
