Almost a year after commissioning the Berkley Group for help on a countywide active transportation plan, Henry County is ready to present the work to the public.
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, the board of supervisors will allow members of the public to offer feedback on the plan as part of its regular session.
The county defines an active transportation plan as projects that emphasize healthier methods of transportation, such as biking or running. The various projects could be connected to each other, offering alternative transportation routes to parts of the county.
“Active transportation refers to any form of human-powered travel, such as walking, cycling, running, or using a wheelchair,” reads information from the Berkley Group. “By prioritizing active transportation within the Henry County transportation network, it will allow individuals to get from place to place using minimal resources, all while promoting personal well-being and a connected Community.”
A community profile characterizes Henry County as an ideal locale for active transportation projects.
“The County’s central location within the region makes it a gateway to outdoor recreation in the mountains, and the cultural and economic activity of nearby urban areas,” reads information from a Berkley Group ecological report.
The project was one of several suggested to promote healthful living. Funds for the project were provided through a U.S. Department of Transportation Thriving Communities grant.
Announced a little over a year ago, the grant offered funds to 35 states across the country from a pool of $23 million.
“This planning, technical assistance, and capacity building support will enable communities to advance a pipeline of transformative infrastructure projects that will increase mobility, reduce pollution, and expand affordable transportation options, connecting communities to the essential opportunities and resources that will help them thrive,” reads information from the Department of Transportation.
Plan details can be found online.
Representatives of the Berkley Group will attend Tuesday’s meeting to provide details and answer questions about the project. Following the presentation, they will be available to speak directly to the public to listen to feedback.
“Community participation is vital to the success of this initiative, and the county looks forward to hearing from its citizens,” reads information from county staff.
