The Virginia High School League 2025 state tournament for spring sports is underway. We have baseball / softball here, lacrosse here and tennis here.
Updated, June 14:
Glenvar’s boys soccer team has lost just one game in the last three seasons and it wasn’t Saturday.
The Highlanders won their third successive VHSL Class 2 championship with a 2-0 whitewash of Bruton (Williamsburg) at Roanoke College.
Glenvar (23-0) extended its three-year win streak to 53 games and stretched its unbeaten streak to 61 dating back to a 2-1 loss to Salem early in the 2023 season. The Highlanders have a three-year record of 65-1-1.
In other soccer Saturday:
* Cave Spring’s bid for a perfect season and a first girls state championship came up just short with a 2-0 loss to Western Albemarle (Crozet) at Fluvanna County High.
It was the fifth state championship since 2017 for Western Albemarle.
*Blacksburg’s boys returned to a state final for the first time since a 2018 championship, but the Bruins were blanked 1-0 by Jamestown in the Class 4 matchup at Monticello High in Charlottesville.
Jamestown’s championship was its sixth, including the 2023 title.
The Bruins own a state-record 13 boys soccer state crowns.
*Auburn’s bid to repeat its 2024 Class 1 girls title was shut down by West Point as the Pointers claimed their first championship with a 4-1 victory at Spartan Field in Salem.
West Point made the 2021 state final, falling 5-1 to Eastern Montgomery.
*EastMont was bidding to become the first boys team to win a state title in school history in the Class 1 final at Spartan Field, but 2023 champion Northampton proved too tough as the Eastern Shore school posted a 7-1 win.
In other soccer Saturday:
Herndon topped Wakefield 3-0 in a battle of Liberty District foes in Class 6 boys, Lightridge (Aldie) took out Floyd Kellam (Virginia Beach) 3-1 in Class 5 boys, Meridian (Falls Church) defeated Western Albemarle 2-1 in Class 3 boys, Deep Run (Glen Allen) blanked South County (Laurel Hill) 1-0 in Class 6 girls, Independence (Ashburn) edged Kellam 3-2 in Class 5 girls, Loudoun County (Leesburg) blanked Woodgrove (Purcellville) in Class 4 girls and Poquoson downed Clarke County 2-1 in Class 2 girls.

Updated, June 13:
Has it been seven years since Blacksburg won a VHSL boys soccer championship?
Yes, the 2018 Class 4 title is the most recent of the school’s state-record 13 state crowns.
The Bruins can make all that moot after scoring a 2-1 win Friday over Monacan at Monticello High. Blacksburg’s opponent in Saturday’s final will be Jamestown, which ousted defending champion Charlottesville 2-0 in the other semifinal.
While Blacksburg’s boys try for a 14th championship, Cave Spring’s girls are chasing their first.
The Roanoke County team made the Class 3 final at Fluvanna County High in Palmyra by the narrowest of margins, edging two-time defending champ Brentsville 4-3 on penalty kicks after the two sides were scoreless through regulation and two overtimes.
Cave Spring will play Western Albemarle, a state champion in 2017, ’18, ’19 and ’21 in Saturday’s final.
Glenvar had hopes of its boys and girls teams repeating 2024 Class 2 titles.
The boys held up their end with a 3-1 triumph over 2022 champ Clarke County, but the Highlanders girls saw their 17-game win streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Poquoson at Roanoke College.
Clarke County, the 2021 and ’23 state champ, defeated Graham (Bluefield) 4-0 in the other Class 2 semifinal.
Glenvar’s boys will shoot for a third state title in a row against Bruton, a 3-0 semifinal winner over 2024 runner-up Radford.
Eastern Montgomery’s boys advanced to the Class 1 final at Spartan Field in Salem with a 3-1 victory over West Point. The Mustangs will seek their first state title in a boys sport against 2023 champion Northampton, which bounced Auburn 5-0 in the other semifinal.
Auburn’s girls made the Class 1 final for the fourth year in a row with a 5-1 win over Altavista. The Eagles go for a second straight championship against West Point, which took a 7-0 victory over George Wythe (Wytheville).
Christiansburg’s boys saw their season come to an end in the Class 3 semifinals with a 6-1 loss to 2023 champion Meridian (Falls Church). Meridian will play 2024 runner-up Western Albemarle for the title.
Saturday’s other finals are Herndon vs. Wakefield in Class 6 boys as both Northern Virginia teams won in PKs, Lightridge (Aldie) vs. Floyd Kellam (Virginia Beach) in Class 5 boys, Deep Run (Richmond) vs. South County (Laurel Hill) in Class 6 girls, Independence (Ashburn) vs. Floyd Kellam in Class 5 girls and Woodgrove (Purcellville) vs. Loudoun County (Leesburg) in Class 4 girls.
