Updated, June 14:

Marion’s Parker White was on the verge of a fourth VHSL Class 2 girls tennis championship Saturday, but Radford’s Lydia Pratt was not a willing participant in the coronation.

Pratt turned the tables on White after losing to the Marion ace in 2024 with a 7-5, 7-6 victory in the singles final at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

White was bidding to become the fourth girl in VHSL history win four singles titles, following Bland County’s Ashleigh Sarver (1996-99), Deep Run’s Nina Sorkin (2014-17) and Maggie Walker’s Anna Soffin (2015-18).

Salem’s Drew Perez won his second consecutive Class 4 boys singles crown in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Powhatan’s Jamison Wallace at Huntington Park in Newport News.

Also in Newport News, the Patrick Henry (Roanoke) sisters Ana Maria Rincon and Kathryn Rincon claimed the Class 5 girls doubles title 6-4, 6-4 against Great Bridge’s Chase London and Kayla Kennedy.

It was Ana Maria Rincon’s second doubles title and fourth state championship overall. The PH junior suffered the first singles loss of her high school career in Friday’s semifinals against Menchville’s Tori Epps.

Epps claimed the championship Saturday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over London.

Fort Chiswell’s Taylor Shrewsbury became her school’s first tennis champion with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Twin Spring’s Addy Bays in the Class 1 girls singles final in Lynchburg.

Richlands’ Jack Clem saw his hopes of a third successive Class 2 boys singles title dashed in Lynchburg by Bruton sophomore Christoph Schweitzer, 6-2, 7-5. Clem defeated Schweitzer in straight sets in the 2024 final.

Salem’s Claire Rawlins reached the Class 4 girls final in Newport News but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Broad Run’s Izzy Rotaru.

Other singles championships were claimed Saturday by Deep Run’s Grant Kroodsma in Class 6 boys, Mills Godwin’s Eli Campbell in Class 5 boys, Western Albemarle’s Brader Eby in Class 3 boys, Thomas Jefferson-Alexandria’s Avery Huang in Class 6 girls and Western Albemarle’s Blythe Sturman in Class 3 girls.

Marion senior Parker White moved a step closer to becoming a four-time VHSL champion with a victory in the Class 2 girls singles semifinals at Liberty University in Lynchburg. White will face Radford’s Lydia Pratt on Saturday in a rematch of the 2024 final.

White and Marion teammate Ava Austin defeated Pratt and Kiera Sartin 6-1, 6-2 to claim the Class 2 girls doubles title.

Richlands’ Jack Clem won his Class 2 boys singles semifinal on Friday and will go for a third successive VHSL title Saturday against Bruton’s Christophe Schweitzer. Clem and teammate Cooper Hurst took the doubles crown Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 verdict over Floyd County’s Cole Howard and Hank Schroeder.

Glenvar’s Alec McIlwain saw his season end shy of the Class 2 boys final with a semifinal loss to Schweitzer.

Salem’s Drew Perez will try to win the Class 4 boys singles title for a second year in a row as he faces Powhatan’s Jamison Wallace in Saturday’s final at Huntington Park in Newport News. Salem’s Claire Rawlins also will play for gold in the Class 4 girls final against Broad Run’s Izzy Rotaru.

Patrick Henry-Roanoke junior Ana Maria Rincon saw her bid for a third straight Class 5 girls singles title end as she fell 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) to Menchville’s Tori Epps. Ana Maria Rincon and younger sister Kathyrn Rincon will play for the doubles title Saturday at Huntington Park.

Fort Chiswell’s Taylor Shrewsbury advanced to the Class 1 girls singles final by ousting defending champion Sadie Packett of Rappahannock 6-0, 6-4. Shrewsbury will meet 2024 runner-up Addy Bays of Twin Springs in Friday’s final at Liberty.

Hidden Valley’s boys duo of Keaton Bartley and Caleb Wang took home the Class 3 doubles runner-up medal, falling 6-2, 6-0 to Western Albemarle’s Brader Eby and Wade Sturman.

Lord Botetourt’s Ethan Steryous dropped a tough Class 3 boys semifinal, falling in a super tiebreak to Meridian’s Thomas Lapp.

Marion High School can now lay claim to being the capital of Virginia High School League Class 2 tennis.

The Scarlet Hurricanes blew through Lynchburg on Thursday and swept both VHSL Class 2 championships at Liberty University.

Marion’s girls took the Class 2 title for the third year in a row with a 5-0 victory over Central-Woodstock. The Marion boys had to work overtime to bring their first championship back to Smyth County before surviving for a 5-4 triumph over Bruton (Williamsburg).

The Marion boys had previously been a Group AA runner-up in 1981 and 1987.

Eleven VHSL state tennis champions were crowned Thursday, and eight were repeat winners, highlighted by Western Albemarle’s boys who won their eighth championship in a row.

Western Albemarle (Crozet) dispatched Tabb 5-1 for its second successive Class 3 title and its 11th overall at Liberty. The Warriors won back-to-back Class 4 championships in 2022-23 along with four more Class 3 victories in 2017, ’18, ’19 and ’21.

The VHSL canceled its 2020 spring sports season because of COVID-19.

Douglas Freeman (Richmond) took its fifth successive girls championship and its sixth overall with a 5-0 decision over Frank Cox (Virginia Beach) at Huntington Park in Newport News.

Maggie Walker Governor’s School (Richmond) claimed its fourth Class 3 girls crown in a row with a 5-1 victory at Liberty over Western Albemarle.

Langley High (McLean) won the boys Class 6 title for a third straight year with a 5-4 verdict over James Madison (Vienna) at Huntington Park.

Rappahannock (Warsaw) met a familiar foe in the Class 1 girls final at Liberty, posting a 5-2 triumph over George Wythe. The Wytheville team took the match into the doubles round after losing to the Raiders 5-0 in the 2024 and ’23 finals.

Charlottesville’s boys and Broad Run’s girls each repeated 2024 titles in Newport News.

Charlottesville scored a 5-2 victory over Rock Ridge (Ashburn) in the Class 4 boys final, while Broad Run (Ashburn) took a 5-1 win over nine-time champion Jamestown in the Class 4 girls title match.

Midlothian posted a 5-0 victory over Hickory High (Chesapeake) in the Class 5 boys final at Huntington Park to claim its first VHSL title since winning four Group AAA crowns in a row from 1977-80. The Chesterfield County school also won the Group AA championship in 1981.

Persistence paid off for Thomas Jefferson High of Alexandria in the Class 6 girls final. The Colonials had been state runners-up five times since 2016, but they claimed their first championship in eight finals appearances with a 5-2 victory over Oakton at Huntington Park.
