A grant for local arts organizations, awarded to Danville by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, must be worked into the city’s budget before it can receive the funds. At its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the city council will decide whether to adopt a budget amendment ordinance approving the funds.
If approved, local arts organizations can apply to receive a portion of the grant money.
The city received the $4,500 grant because it participates in the Creative Communities Partnership Grant through the state’s Commission for the Arts.
The program works to encourage local governments to support the arts.
The city is providing a local match of $5,000 for a total grant of $9,500, according to the staff report in the meeting’s agenda packet.
Local arts groups can apply to receive some of this funding. The application window is open through Oct. 1.
To request an application, local arts organizations can email Charlene Presley with the city’s parks and recreation department at preslcj@danvilleva.gov or pick up a paper application at Ballou Recreation Center at 760 W. Main St. in Danville.
In the past, organizations like the Danville Area Choral Art Society, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, the Danville Symphony Orchestra, the Danville Concert Association and the Smokestack Theater Company have received grant funding from this program.
“City staff review the applications and make award recommendations to the local arts grant force, who vote on the final awards,” the staff report says.
Award recipients are then notified via letter of their award amount, and funds must be spent before June 30, 2026.
Staff recommends that the city adopt the budget amendment ordinance that would allow for these funds to be added to the budget.
The council meeting will be followed by a work session.
Also this week in Danville, the board of zoning appeals will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.
In Pittsylvania County, the board of supervisors will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m., after an afternoon work session, and the Industrial Development Authority will meet Wednesday at 6 p.m.
